What Martin Luther King Jr. Would Say About Today’s Small Business Owner

Posted on January 23rd, 2012

Im no scholar. And its a pretty bold thing for me to say that I know what Dr. King would have said about anything at any time. He was a brilliant man, and I mean no disrespect with the title of this post.

My observations of Dr. Kings life, work, and words, some of which are depicted in todays Google Doodle shown here, do lend themselves to a few conclusions, however, and one of them is that, if Dr. King were alive today, he would have a thing or two to say about small and independent business owners. Heres how I think hed put it:

  1. Write your own emancipation proclamation.

I come here tonight and plead with you. Believe in yourself and believe that youre somebody. Nobody else can do this for us! No document can do this for us.

Orange delays law requiring gas stations to post prices

Posted on January 20th, 2012

Orange County leaders delayed a decision Tuesday on whether to require gasoline stations to display pump prices prominently.

Orange County leaders delayed a decision Tuesday on whether to require gasoline stations to display pump prices prominently.

The postponement until Feb. 7 came after a debate over which price the stations should post its highest or lowest charge.

The ordinance follows the lead of Orlando leaders, who approved a law requiring highly visible signs at stations near Orlando International Airport, where customers often rush to top off the tank of a rental car.

The Orange law would give businesses 90 days to put up signs. Stations that do not comply would face a fine of up to $1,000 a day.

Can’t Pay Income Tax

Posted on January 17th, 2012

First of all, even if you owe more taxes than you can pay by the income tax filing deadline, you should still file your income tax return on time to avoid late-filing penalties. (See the Income Tax FAQ “What happens if I don’t file my income tax on time?”.)

Once the CRA has processed your income tax return, they’ll send you a Notice of Assessment. If the Notice of Assessment shows an income tax balance owing that you can’t pay immediately, you should contact a tax services office, which will help you set up a mutually acceptable payment schedule.

Posted on January 17th, 2012

To be in the midst of oil and gas exploration and production to the east, south and north; to be in the middle of wind energy production; and to be surrounded by coal production, with the prospect of much more to come; Billings could easily be proclaimed as an “energy hub.” That’s just what Big Sky Economic Development Authority (BSED) is proclaiming, as they set as a priority, the recruitment of companies to Billings and Yellowstone County which are engaged in energy-related businesses.

“We make the perfect hub to locate offices or to manufacture stuff,” said Jeremy Vannatta, who is BSED’s Director of Business Outreach, Recruitment “>

J.T. and Dale talk jobs: Making connections in new city will aid hunt

Posted on January 2nd, 2012

Dear J.T. & Dale: I am a 28-year-old with a college degree, who recently moved across the country. I can’t find a job. I’m probably overqualified for many positions, but I really just need to work. How do I get hired? – Nick

DALE: Looking for work in a new city can be doubly lonesome. You start to feel like the stray cat that nobody wants to feed for fear that it won’t go away. However, there is one group that will welcome you in: your college alumni group. You instantly belong, and there will be people in that group who will want to help you get established in their town and will make introductions on your behalf.

J.T.: Maybe that will include introductions to potential employers, but you can’t count on it. Getting referred into companies in a new city isn’t as hard as you might think, but it does take work. Start by finding several groups or organizations related to your field of interest.
