Office Coach: Too-friendly boss must build ‘presence’

Posted on November 25th, 2011

Q: As a supervisor, I have always had a friendly, nonconfrontational leadership style. I have a dry sense of humor and enjoy joking around with my staff. Recently, one of my employees told me that she feels the others are very disrespectful towards me. I was surprised, because I never viewed their bantering as disrespect.

In the past, my manager has also suggested that employees may not respect me because I am too nice and friendly with them. I disagreed at the time, but now I think she may be right. How can I overcome my history and get more respect?

A: Before undertaking a leadership style makeover, you must correctly identify the change you need to make. The problem here is not that you are a nice, friendly, jovial person. After all, no one wants to work for a supervisor who is humorless and mean-spirited.

The more likely difficulty is that you lack “management presence” – that is, the ability to comfortably relate to people from a position of authority.

Tablets top wish lists for holiday shoppers

Posted on November 24th, 2011

Despite the gloomy economy, shoppers are expected to shell out for tablet computers this December, making them about as popular as candy canes and twinkling lights.

The glossy-screened gadgets are the most-desired electronic devices this holiday season. And, of all the gifts people are craving, tablets are second only to clothing, according to the Consumer Electronics Association. The industry group expects U.S. consumers to spend an average of $246 on electronic gifts.

With help from his three siblings, Bob Cardina, 26, plans to purchase an iPad for his parents for Christmas. Cardina and his sister live in Washington. His parents live in Tampa, Fla. So he’s excited to be able to video chat with his parents — them on the new iPad, him on his iPhone.

To be sure, tablets were on some wish lists last year, but they were mostly prized by gadget geeks. In the past year, they have become more mainstream. Read full article…

Social media helps build rapport with customers, small businesses told

Posted on November 15th, 2011

Small business owners could look at their management of social media following the advice of one expert.

Tim Gibbon, director at communications consultancy Elemental, said that, if used correctly, social networks can help businesses on “quite a few different levels”.

He says firms can develop a stronger rapport with customers in addition to creating, enhancing and supporting their promotional activity at the same time.

His comments come after small businesses were told in October by Edward Saatchi – co-founder of National Field – that email is a dying form of communication, with companies generally turning to social media platforms.

Mr Gibbon added that the benefits to social networking include the platform it creates to reach a variety of stakeholders and customers directly.

“And this is where the opportunity lies for businesses, in that they do not need to use traditional marketing and media channels to engage and interact with audiences directly,” he explained.

No human contact would hurt health of killer whales, SeaWorld vet testifies

Posted on November 13th, 2011

SANFORD The top veterinarian at SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment testified Friday that limiting the contact SeaWorld trainers have with killer whales could have long-term, negative health consequences for the animals.

Chris Dold, vice president of veterinary services for the parent company of SeaWorld marine parks, said permitting trainers to work in close contact with the whales including in the water with the giant marine mammals helps ensure that they detect signs of illnesses earlier, allowing vets to more effectively treat the animals.

“When you push that boundary further away, our sensitivity goes down not incapacitatingly so, but down,” Dold said on what is expected to the final day of a legal hearing examining safety practices at SeaWorld.

The U.S.

Cause-Related Marketing

Posted on November 12th, 2011

Altruism. Corporate responsibility. Philanthropy. These are often used to describe cause-related marketing, an activity in which businesses join with charities or causes to market an image, product, or service for mutual benefit.

Embracing a cause makes good business sense. Nothing builds brand loyalty among today’s increasingly hard-to-please consumers like a company’s proven commitment to a worthy cause. Other things being equal, many consumers would rather do business with a company that stands for something beyond profits.

Powerful Marketing Edge

Cause-related marketing can become a cornerstone of your marketing plan. Your cause-related marketing activities should highlight your company’s reputation within your target market.
