Crude oil prices rebound Tuesday

Posted on May 16th, 2011

NEW YORK, May 17 (UPI) — Crude oil prices moved close to $98 per barrel Tuesday in New York as oil prices rebounded modestly from nearly two weeks of declines.

The New York Federal Reserve said Monday its headline index measuring Empire State manufacturing showed slower growth in May than in April. On Tuesday, the Department of Commerce said the number of building permits issued and home construction starts in April both fell, dropping 4 percent and 10.6 percent, respectively, compared with March.

Crude oil, however, found support from a weaker dollar. The dollar index, a prorated measure of the dollar against six major currencies, dropped 0.19 percent Tuesday.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, June delivery West Texas Intermediate crude oil added 95 cents to reach $97.86 per barrel. Home heating oil prices gained 3.65 cents to $2.8816 per gallon.

Small Business Jobs and Credit Act Helps Increase Small Business Loans

Posted on May 16th, 2011

Small Business Jobs and Credit Act of 2010 is great news for American small businesses. The provisions of the act introduce several tools, in-order, to make small businesses more competitive. The definition of small business gets broadened; it increases the loan size of small business administration and also makes tax benefits available to small businesses.

SBA, the federal agency, makes up to 85 % loans available to banks so as to help them fund small businesses. The entire idea of SBA guaranteeing loans is to generate jobs. Programs under SBA are designed to inspire lenders to pour money into the economy. John Manalli, SBA Deputy District Director, Says, “Once the idea is designed and business plan is in place, then the SBA can direct people to the right loan for their business.”

The SBA has kept this goal in mind and is organizing a free workshop to make information available to current businesses and potential small business owners. Att

How Commodities Could Really Fall Apart

Posted on May 16th, 2011

Commodities have fallen a lot, but if Chinese growth were to decelerate, they would really crater.

SocGen’s Cross Asset Research team explains:

Hard commodities will fall apart if China starts to slow in H2 11. For example, early in 2011, we already saw a dramatic fall-off in Chinese appetite for copper although prices remained high due to continued production issues. Contrastingly, agricultural demand from China is likely to protect soft commodities better from a fall in prices as demand is still trending higher. For example, soybean imports from China doubled over the past five years which means demand was up by nearly 5Mt/year. The recent tightening in monetary policy had a limited impact on soybean prices and even the deceleration in economic growth could fail to curtail agricultural demand.

A Positively Legal Fish Tale

Posted on May 16th, 2011

One of the East Coast’s most successful and renowned restaurants recently opened a new store in a suitably perfect location: Right on the water.

The Boston Globe reports Legal Sea Foods, which has 32 restaurants stretching from Boston to Florida, opened Legal Harborside on Liberty Wharf in the Seaport District.

The restaurant that fulfills a time-honored custom of serving clam chowder to newly inaugurated U.S. presidents has a new flagship site. Facing Logan Airport, Legal Harborside is a 23,000-square foot restaurant that has a capacity of 700, which establishes it as one of Boston’s biggest restaurants.

“The birthing of this was a long time coming,” Roger Berkowitz, president and chief executive of Legal Sea Foods, told the publication. “If you’re in the seafood business in Boston 60-odd years you definitely want to be on the water.”

The new restaurant with a long, successful history in Boston occupies hallowed ground. Read full article…

S. Korea interest rate unchanged

Posted on May 12th, 2011

SEOUL, May 13 (UPI) — South Korea’s central bank Friday left its benchmark seven-day repo interest rate unchanged at 3 percent despite inflationary pressures.

It was the second straight month the Bank of Korea had taken such action.

Yonhap News agency reported the decision by bank Gov. Kim Choong-soo and his policymakers was a surprise, as only three out of 17 experts in its survey had anticipated the move.

“Consumer prices are likely to sustain their strong upward trend, due mainly to demand-side pressures and high oil prices,” the bank said, adding the Korean economy is on a solid growth track.

However, it said unstable oil prices and the Euro zone debt problems pose downside risks.

Korean consumer prices rose 4.2 percent in April year-on-year, but eased from 4.7 percent in March. The central bank wants to keep the rate below 4 percent.

WEST VIRGINIA IS IN A POPULATION CRISIS

Posted on May 11th, 2011

West Virginia is the only state to report a decrease in population. Dealths outpace births and the race is expected to continue. The once booming area used to house an abundance young couples and children, but with the decline of the steel mill the largest employer, these families are forced to relocate to survive.
The sense of community is dwindling if not gone in some areas. The aging population just does not have the energy, or in some cases, the ability to activily participate in community building activites. Gone are the days of festivals, fairs, and parades unless the younger generation steps up to the challenge.
Weirton, West Virgina is a perfect example of this story. With just 71 babies born on average for every 100 residents who die, Brooke County, in which Weirton is partly located, has the largest such gap in the nation among counties in metropolitan areas, save for a handful of places that are magnets for retirees.
