THE RETURN: Ambrose Evans-Pritchard Is Finally Back, And He’s Got A Blistering Assault On EU Hypocrisy

Posted on July 6th, 2011

After an incredibly long hiatus, The Telegraph’s star financial columnist/reporter Ambrose Evans-Pritchard is back.

Given the ructions in the EU — which is his wheelhouse — his voice has been sorely missing during his sabbatical.

Topic A for Ambrose? The EU’s newfound disdain for the ratings agencies, which have been speaking the truth about the Greek bailout (yes, the Greek rollover is a default) and Portugal (c’mon, of course it should be junk-rated).

That’s earned the ratings aencies all sorts of scorn in recent days, with German FinMin Wolfgang Schäuble and EU President Jose Barroso both talking about breaking up their oligopoly.

Sure, there are flaws with the raters, but as Prithcard points out…

But let us be clear. The EU itself brought this about by declaring war on the very investors needed to finance the vast borrowing needs of the European project.

They were told what many owners in the 38-year-old condominium building already knew: Options are limited.

Social change startups graduate from incubator

Posted on July 5th, 2011

PROVIDENCE — Eleven startups focused on social change and sustainability graduated from Social Venture Partners Rhode Island’s Change Accelerator program June 30.

The businesses are all Rhode Island-based. They received $1,000 fellowships, spaces to work and business support from mentors during the eight-week program.

The Providence-based program was offered for the first time last summer, and the first Newport Change Accelerator class graduated in April.

This class was the Change Accelerator porgram’s largest and had more for-profit and locally focused ventures than in past programs, said SVPRI Executive Director Kelly Ramirez.

Five ventures who were not participants audited the program, Ramirez said.

“There’s a real demand for this program,” she said. SVPRI hopes

Up on the roof, a turbine, some wind

Posted on July 5th, 2011

WAYNE, Mich., July 5 (UPI) — A wind-powered roof turbine in Michigan is drawing curiosity and not complaints from neighbors, its owner said.

“I thought maybe in some small way I’m one of the pioneers for a greener America,” said Ted Klein, who installed the 241-pound WindTronics turbine on his roof about six weeks ago, The Detroit News reported Tuesday.

Brian Levine, WindTronics vice president of business development, said, “We’ve sold thousands of units across the planet,” but neighbors are still reacting as if it was a curiosity, the newspaper said.

“Most everyone is curious,” said Judith Klein, Ted Klein’s wife.

The American Wind Energy Association said less than 2 percent of the country’s small turbine market involved urban dwellings.

It costs $8,200 to install and sits on a pole a few feet above the roof ridge line.

Changing Failure to Wins with Business Efficiency

Posted on July 5th, 2011

Just because your business isn’t running as efficiently as it could doesn’t mean that you can’t tweak your procedures to turn it into a well-oiled machine. By paying close attention to where you’re wasting time and money, small changes can make a bigger difference than you ever imagined. Here are a few tips to get you started.

Before you make the first change, it’s important to keep a good record of the results of your current process. Without this, you’ll have no clear idea if your changes were effective. Once you identify a process that’s taking too long, make one or two changes and measure again. This practice will let you know if you’re tackling the right problems and if your changes actually worked. Once you get the hang of it, you can proceed at a faster rate.

Some people think that everything will work out if they just work harder. This sounds lik

Prosecutors want Marian Morgan evidence readmitted

Posted on July 4th, 2011

The exclusion of the documents appears to have been a key factor in Morgan’s decision to go to trial, despite the fact that her husband, John, and another defendant have both decided to plead guilty.

The documents were confiscated by the U.S. government when the Morgans were brought back from Sri Lanka — where they were being held on a charge unrelated to the Ponzi scheme — in late 2009.

The question that led to the magistrate judge’s ruling was whether federal law enforcement officials were merely inventorying a host of materials that the Morgans brought back from Sri Lanka or whether the agents’ work was a warrantless examination of the materials for their investigation.

Judge Thomas B.

JPMorgan: 4 Reasons China Is About To Come Bounding Back In The Second Half Of The Year

Posted on July 4th, 2011

JPM makes the bull case on the Chinese economy:

A rebound likely on sequential growth recovery in 3Q FY11.We believe the China market might have reached the maximum stress point, given: (1) CPI is expected to peak around June/July this year; (2) the magnitude of the monetary tightening may have peaked as the inter-bank rate has started to flatten out; (3) China’s sequential economic growth appears to have troughed in 2Q FY11; and (4) we have seen the first signs of a possible policy loosening from the government, as indicated by the recent suspension of the PBoC bill issuance.
