IRS Announces Tax Filing Relief for NC Victims of April 16 Storms

Posted on June 30th, 2011

GREENSBORO — Victims of severe storms, tornadoes and flooding on April 16, 2011 in parts of North Carolina may qualify for tax relief from the Internal Revenue Service.

The President has declared the following counties a federal disaster area: Bertie, Bladen, Cumberland, Halifax, Harnett, Johnston, Lee, Onslow, Wake and Wilson. Individuals who reside or have a business in these counties may qualify for tax relief.

As a result, the IRS is postponing until June 30 certain deadlines for taxpayers who live or have a business in the disaster area. This includes the April 18 deadline for filing 2010 individual income tax returns, making income tax payments and making 2010 contributions to an individual retirement account (IRA).

In addition, the IRS is waiving the failure-to-deposit penalties for employment and excise tax deposits due on or after April 16 and on or before May 2, 2011, as long as the deposits were made by May 2, 2011.

If an affected taxpayer receives a penalty notice from the IRS, the taxpayer should call the telephone number on the notice to have the IRS abate any interest and any late filing or late payment penalties that would otherwise apply. P Read full article…

Facebook Shows Signs of Slowing

Posted on June 30th, 2011

Questions continue to rise for the social media giant Facebook as the company considers an initial public offering next year. Inside Facebook reports that the website saw losses last month in its earliest adopters, the U.S. and Canada, even as its worldwide customer base grew.

The website found that Facebook had grown to around 687 million active users through May, from more than 675 million at the start of the month. Though this represents 1.7 percent growth, the U.S. actually lost nearly 6 million users last month and another 1.5 million from Canada.

These losses were more than made up for by huge gains in Brazil, Mexico and Thailand, each of which saw more than 7 percent growth, with Brazil reaching as high as 10 percent.

The Financial Times notes, however, that last year Mark Zuckerberg had revealed to IF that the site used to see around 3 percent growth per week, showing the site has clearly substantially slowed its gains. Read full article…

Limited schedule of planned Legoland park raises questions

Posted on June 30th, 2011

That philosophy seems to apply to its operating schedule after it opens Oct. 15.

Legoland Florida will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, in glaring contrast to the seven-day, late-night schedules of the established theme parks in the Orlando area.

The attraction had not yet released the operating schedule when it began selling annual passes at a discount. The discount ended April 30, but spokeswoman Jackie Wallace said the attraction has not received any complaints from buyers about the schedule.

Legoland Florida will follow the same general format as Legoland California, which opened in 1999 and has been successful, said Kim Isemann, director of sales and marketing at the Winter Haven park.

“Once we all got here from our team, we started having conversations with the team in California and tried to see where it would work for us to apply the same model,” Isemann said.
