Gas stations near airport will be fined by Orlando
Posted on October 22nd, 2011
Two gas stations near Orlando International Airport were found guilty by the code enforcement board of violating city law Friday because signs advertising their extraordinarily high prices can’t be easily seen by drivers.
Suncoast Energys and Sun Gas will be fined $1,000 a day starting Oct. 28 if they don’t make their signs more visible, the board ruled.
An ordinance adopted last year required the stations to put up signs advertising their prices, which were $5.69 for a gallon of regular earlier this week.
The independently owned stations routinely charge among the highest fuel prices in the America, but until recently posted prices only on the gas pump, not on large signs consumers are accustomed to seeing.
An ordinance adopted last year was meant to change that, but the stations’ owners sued and only recently lost in court.

Closing a Business
Posted on October 14th, 2011
On the previous page I explained how to cancel your business registration or dissolve your coporation, the first step to closing a business. Now that youve dissolved or canceled your business structure, youre ready to deal with the tax accounts you need to wind up to close your business.
2. If you have dissolved a corporation, you will want to send the Canada Revenue Agency a copy of the Articles of Dissolution when you file the final return for the corporation. (Otherwise, the CRA will assume the corporation still exists and you will have to continue to file an annual tax return for the corporation forever, even if theres no tax payable.)
3. You will, of course, also want to wind up your payroll accounts when youre closing your business.

Going out of business?
Posted on September 23rd, 2011
At the beginning of the year, Walker County poultry farmer Dorman Grace had six large poultry houses and was producing about 400,000 chickens each year.
In January, an ice storm took down one of the 40-foot by 400-foot barns. The April 27 tornadoes demolished three more.
“It was a significant blow,” said Grace, a third-generation poultry grower, about the impact it had on his business. “But we were blessed. We had neighbors who lost their houses and other farmers lost their lives. We just had a mess to clean up.”
Grace is now one of an estimated 170 to 200 Alabama poultry producers recovering from tornado damage. And some, like Grace, are opting not to rebuild.
“Most of them are getting ready or are back in production,” said Dr. Tony Frazier, state veterinarian with the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries.
New hires, robotics eliminate FBI DNA backlog
Posted on September 21st, 2011
The FBI has eliminated a backlog of more than 300,000 DNA samples, with help from a new cadre of employees, contractors and robotics, the agency’s top auditor told .
The bureau’s Federal DNA Database Unit hired 28 new employees to upload more than 312,000 DNA samples into the FBI’s Combined DNA Index System (CODIS), according to a report from the Justice Department’s inspector general’s office. The FBI collected the DNA from federal convicted offenders, arrestees and detainees.
Law enforcement uses the database to find DNA profiles that might help solve unresolved cases or cases without a suspect.
The DNA Database Unit also added 11 contractors to help with the backlog, the report said.
“There are those who help get the samples ready to be run through the system, and then you have analysts at the end who have to carefully review [the work] ,” said acting inspector general Cynthia Schnedar in an interview with .

Taxpayers could be on hook for jobs agency’s misspending
Posted on August 27th, 2011
As investigators dig into the finances of the region’s workforce development board, federal law indicates that Central Florida taxpayers might have to repay any money that is ultimately determined to have been misspent.
Workforce Central Florida leaders insist that’s not likely, and Orange County’s attorney says local governments have “no legal liability.” But the federal law that created the agency suggests otherwise.
“The chief elected official in a local area shall serve as the local grant recipient,” the law says, “and shall be liable for any misuse of the grants funds.”
That could put taxpayers in the agency’s five-county service area on the hook for some of the $739,000 that the state recently ordered Workforce Central Florida to repay. Read full article…

Preventing Identity Theft
Posted on August 24th, 2011
The ever-growing problem of identity theft means that businesses need to make concerted efforts to protect their customers’ personal information and other sensitive business data. Here are five more things you can do to prevent identity theft:
6) Protect your computer from hackers.
Hacking into company systems and databases appears to have become a favourite identity theft technique perhaps because in so many cases, its so easy. Your computer network needs to be protected by firewalls, which help keep out intruders by shutting out unauthorized people and letting others go only to the areas they have privileges to use. You can purchase firewalls at any computer store (or online). Another option for small or home businesses is to purchase and install a small (four to eight port) router.
