Clue or error? Google’s +1 feature hits national airwaves
Posted on May 4th, 2011
Google inadvertently tipped its poker hand about its browser’s new feature, techcrunch.com reports.
But a lingering question that must be asked about the tech giant’s very deliberate ways is whether the move was calculated.
The Mountain View, California-based search giant’s newly released “Dear Sophie” video contains a revelation about an unreleased product: an upgrade to the Chrome browser, known as the +1 extension. At the 0:51 mark, the feature is on display beside the symbol for Picasa, the company’s online photo album.
Google formally introduced +1 last month, presenting it as a method of socially sharing results from Google Search. The feature also will assist Google rank search results.
The company periodically indicated it was developing a +1 feature, fueling speculation that the company is aiming to have the new feature be an integral part of sharing additional social networks. That’s the implicit message of the +1 toolbar.
But because Google aired the “Dear Sophie” video on national television, the question that begs an answer is whether the leak was purposeful since it was viewable to millions of people. But that also could have been a mistake.
