Barclays’ £50,000 small business competition

Posted on April 8th, 2010

Take One Small Step aims to encourage people to turn their business ideas into reality and existing firms to develop successfully.

Barclays will award ten prizes of £50,000 each to the best business ideas.

Firms must prepare a pitch and submit their idea to Barclays whose judges will shortlist entries and then ten regional winners will be selected by a public vote.

One of the first to enter was Mervyn Hathaway from Bristol, who runs a monthly magazine and website called We Love Darts.

The magazine has just celebrated its first anniversary and is now sold in WHSmith and other newsagents.

Mervyn, 38, a former darts player and coach, is creating a national pub tournament with the support of sponsors, including JJB Sports and Gala Casinos.

He has also received support from professionals such as Eric Bristow and Phil Taylor.

Mervyn says: ‘I could see there was real scope to launch a darts magazine – after all, there are two million active darts players in Britain.

‘I have lots of ideas about how to develop the magazine and the business further if I were lucky enough to win.’

The closing date for entries is May 9. Go to takeonesmallstep.co.uk.
